Belief No.4 - Based on the following
scriptures, I believe I have another enemy, my physical body.
In 1 Timothy 6:12, we read,
"Fight the good fight of faith...".
Here we see that the Christian life is a battle. It is a continuous
fight for our faith. If we keep our faith intact, then life is easy.
If we succumb to the plots of our enemy, Satan, to undermine our
faith, then we lose the peace and happiness God has for us, and life
becomes difficult. Another enemy to the Christian is his physical
body. It tends to crave things that are not good and can act as a
distraction to take the Christians focus off of Christ and His plan
for our lives, and place it on the things of this natural world.
Allowing the flesh to have it's way will lead you down a road toward
anxiety and defeat.
Romans 6:13
- Do not offer the parts of your body to sin, as instruments
of wickedness, but rather offer yourselves to God, as those who have
been brought from death to life; and offer the parts of your body to
him as instruments of righteousness.
Romans 7:5
- For when we were controlled by the sinful nature,[ 7:5 Or the
flesh; also in verse 25] the sinful passions aroused by the law were
at work in our bodies, so that we bore fruit for death.
Romans
7:18 - I know that nothing good lives in me, that is, in my sinful
nature.[ 7:18 Or my flesh] For I have the desire to do what is good,
but I cannot carry it out.
Rom 8:1-14 - There is therefore now no condemnation to them which
are in Christ Jesus, who walk not after the flesh, but after the
Spirit. 2because
through Christ Jesus the law of the Spirit of life set me free from
the law of sin and death. 3For what the law was powerless
to do in that it was weakened by the sinful nature,[2]
God did by sending his own Son in the likeness of sinful man to be a
sin offering.[3]
And so he condemned sin in sinful man,[4]
4in order that the righteous requirements of the law
might be fully met in us, who do not live according to the sinful
nature but according to the Spirit.
5Those who live according to the sinful nature have their
minds set on what that nature desires; but those who live in
accordance with the Spirit have their minds set on what the Spirit
desires. 6The mind of sinful man[5]
is death, but the mind controlled by the Spirit is life and peace;
7the sinful mind[6]
is hostile to God. It does not submit to God's law, nor can it do
so. 8Those controlled by the sinful nature cannot please
God.
9You, however, are controlled not by the sinful nature
but by the Spirit, if the Spirit of God lives in you. And if anyone
does not have the Spirit of Christ, he does not belong to Christ.
10But if Christ is in you, your body is dead because of
sin, yet your spirit is alive because of righteousness. 11And
if the Spirit of him who raised Jesus from the dead is living in
you, he who raised Christ from the dead will also give life to your
mortal bodies through his Spirit, who lives in you.
12Therefore, brothers, we have an obligation--but it is
not to the sinful nature, to live according to it. 13For
if you live according to the sinful nature, you will die; but if by
the Spirit you put to death the misdeeds of the body, you will live,
14because those who are led by the Spirit of God are sons
of God.
Gal. 5:16-25 - So I say, live by the
Spirit, and you will not gratify the desires of the sinful nature.
17For the sinful nature desires what is contrary to the
Spirit, and the Spirit what is contrary to the sinful nature. They
are in conflict with each other, so that you do not do what you
want. 18But if you are led by the Spirit, you are not
under law.
19The acts of the sinful nature are obvious: sexual
immorality, impurity and debauchery; 20idolatry and
witchcraft; hatred, discord, jealousy, fits of rage, selfish
ambition, dissensions, factions 21and envy; drunkenness,
orgies, and the like. I warn you, as I did before, that those who
live like this will not inherit the kingdom of God.
22But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace,
patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, 23gentleness
and self-control. Against such things there is no law. 24Those
who belong to Christ Jesus have crucified the sinful nature with its
passions and desires. 25Since we live by the Spirit, let
us keep in step with the Spirit.
Eph. 4:22-24 -
You were taught, with regard to your
former way of life, to put off your old self, which is being
corrupted by its deceitful desires; 23to be made new in
the attitude of your minds; 24and to put on the new self,
created to be like God in true righteousness and holiness.
1 Pet. 1:14-16 -
As obedient children, do not conform
to the evil desires you had when you lived in ignorance. 15But
just as he who called you is holy, so be holy in all you do; 16for
it is written: "Be holy, because I am holy.
1 John 3:5-9 -
But you know that he appeared so that
he might take away our sins. And in him is no sin. 6No
one who lives in him keeps on sinning. No one who continues to sin
has either seen him or known him.
7Dear children, do not let anyone lead you astray. He who
does what is right is righteous, just as he is righteous. 8He
who does what is sinful is of the devil, because the devil has been
sinning from the beginning. The reason the Son of God appeared was
to destroy the devil's work. 9No one who is born of God
will continue to sin, because God's seed remains in him; he cannot
go on sinning, because he has been born of God.
