How Does God Speak To Us?
God speaks to us
primarily in four ways:
1) He speaks to us as we
read His Word, the Bible.
As you are reading, something will just seem to jump out at you, or
it will suddenly connect to something else you read previously. It
will just become real to you.
Hebrews 4:12 For the word of God is
living and active. Sharper than any double-edged sword, it
penetrates even to dividing soul and spirit, joints and marrow; it
judges the thoughts and attitudes of the heart.
2) He will speak to you
in His 'gentle whisper'.
You won't usually be able to hear it audibly, but there will develop
in you an awareness that He is saying something. Especially, during
times of decision-making. If you give Him time, He will help you
make wise choices. This is a common way for God to guide people, and
this is why people with anxiety can't hear God speak, because their
minds are always racing. A person with
anxiety needs to slow down their thinking so they can truly hear God
speak to them. Faith is God's answer to anxiety and enjoying a
peaceful mind.
1 KINGS 19:11-13
The LORD said, "Go out and stand on the mountain in the presence of
the LORD, for the LORD is about to pass by."
Then a great and powerful wind tore the mountains apart and
shattered the rocks before the LORD, but the LORD was not in the
wind. After the wind there was an earthquake, but the LORD was not
in the earthquake. 12 After the earthquake came a fire, but the LORD
was not in the fire. And after the fire came a gentle whisper. 13
When Elijah heard it, he pulled his cloak over his face and went out
and stood at the mouth of the cave.
Then a voice said to him, "What are you doing here, Elijah?"
3) The third way God
speaks to us is by dreams and visions.
All through the Bible God reveals his
truths in dreams; Jacob [Gen 28:12-15]; Joseph [Gen 37:5-11]; Laban
[Gen 31:24]; King Nebuchadnezzer of Babylon [Daniel Chapter 2], and
the Pharaoh of Egypt in the time of Joseph [Gen 41:1-15]; were all
were enlightened by God through dreams. And finally in a prophetic
word, God said that in the last days,
'...Your sons and your daughters
shall prophecy, your old men shall dream dreams, and your young men
shall see visions.' [Joel 2:28]
4) The fourth way God
will speak to you is through people.
People will be speaking to you and it will just seem to connect to a
problem you have been
dealing with. Or, something your pastor is preaching about will just
seem to hit home. God even
uses non-Christian people to speak to you, so be open to His
guidance at all times. In fact, an excellent way to receive
guidance from God for a particular problem in your life is to speak
with a number of trusted, respected Godly individuals and see what
they tell you to do about the problem. Usually, a similar answer
from most of the these people should be highly considered as God
speaking to you to resolve your problem.
Proverbs 11:14 Where no
counsel is, the people fall: but in the multitude of counsellors
there is safety.
